Dust Effect on the Optically Modulated Images
Image degradation caused by atmospheric effects (i.e. dust and humidity), using laser communication system is studied and investigated, experimentally and analytically, through our present work. A laser communication system, consisting of a 785 nm-laser diode with 1mW output power and a homemade chamber, has been designed and used to simulate atmospheric effects.The research's outline is based on two axes; the first aims to investigate the effects of increasing dust particles (i.e. concentration of soil particles) on transmitted images. The test carried on four different types of soil (sand, loam, silt clay, and clay), collected from different areas of Iraq. In the second research's axis, image processing techniques are adapted and used for image restoration.Image degradation has been studied as to be a contamination by different types of noise (i.e. additive and / or multiplicative), using image statistics (i.e. mean and standard deviation values). Moreover, image noise is distinguished by utilising the Fourier power spectrum of existed noise. A newly color enhancement technique is introduced to remove the chromatic distortion appeared on transmitted images.
