It was formed in 1810, becoming Kentucky's 53rd county. As of 2000, the population was 13,010. Its county seat is Morgantown, Kentucky. Butler is a prohibition or dry county. Butler County is part of the Western Coal Fields region of Kentucky. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 432 square miles (1,119 km2), of which 428 square miles (1,109 km2) is land and 3 square miles (7.8 km2) is water.
