It is the administrative center of Vedensky District. 2004 official data reported a population of 11,512; 3,735 men, 1,525 pre-school age children, 1,604 school age children, and 4,648 women. According to 2002 Census, the population in 2002 was 1,469; down from 2,504 registered in 1989 Census). The Vedeno Gorge is currently considered one of the most dangerous regions in Chechnya and the region has a long history as a primary location in the Chechen fight against Russian control.
