He began his legal career in 1949, and was appointed as a Judge of Calcutta High Court in July 1968. In June 1986, he was appointed as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. In March 1983, he was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India, and became Chief Justice of India in December 1989.
